History of Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center

Fifty one years ago, Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center (HSNHC) opened its doors to provide comprehensive healthcare to all and to respond to the unique concerns of our neighborhood. A half a century later, HSNHC continues to serve the neighborhood… although today that neighborhood is much larger. Residents of Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan, and more than 37 zip codes, are part of the one million patients who have passed through HSNHC’s portal.

In 1965, two Boston based physicians, both deeply involved in the civil rights movement, Drs. Jack Geiger and Count Gibson opened the first two community health centers in the country. One center was in Mississippi and one was right here in Boston at the Columbia Point neighborhood. Our doors opened four years later providing community-based and patient-directed healthcare with a culturally respectful approach to our patients and the surrounding community.  It was the belief of many that without equal access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities our nation would fail to provide true opportunity for all.

Today, HSNHC staff provides a wide array of care for a patient population ranging from infants to seniors to improve their physical, behavioral, vision and dental health. Nearly 1 in 3 of our patients are served in a language other than English. Many of our patients face economic challenges. Over 69% of our patients are at or below the federal poverty level or have no insurance or rely on Medicaid. We are honored to care for ALL our neighbors in an open, positive and clinically-outstanding environment.

Building on over a half century tradition – please help us as we create a new Harvard Street facility that will allow us to address the new realities of our communities. In our new facility we will be able to better combat the opioid crisis that severely impacts our community; continue to partner with community organizations and provide behavioral health services to youth who have experienced trauma resulting from exposure to violence; expand tele-health care and provide community space for our neighbors.

Please share our legacy of being an integral part of our community’s health and social fabric. We ask you to be our partner as we invest in our community’s future.

Thank you from all of us here at Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center
